Abstract – The study presents the results of examining γ-radiation mediated decomposition kinetics of transformer oil Sovtol comprising highly toxic polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in hexane (non-polar solvent) or ethanol (polar solvent) solutions. A series of specific features of kinetic transformation has been studied for PCBs from transformer oil at different content levels (initial concentrations of components are varied in the range from 0.86 to 192 mg/l) under γ-irradiation of model solutions irradiated with various doses up to 275 kGy. The decomposition degree of PCBs containing different initial amount of chlorine atoms is determined. Degradation mechanism discrepancies are discussed for PCBs molecules in hexane and ethanol which appear to have resulted from different polarity degree of solvents.
Keywords: polychlorinated biphenyls, Sovtol, hexane, ethanol, radiolysis, irradiation dose.
