Abstract – Plasma-chemical devices of electric discharge treatment of water were developed. The paper presents the results of studying the influence of spark and barrier discharges on water containing vegetative cells of the main groups of microorganisms – gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A decrease in the concentration of viable cells of these microorganisms after the treatment of suspensions by electric discharge plasma was demonstrated, thus confirming a principle possibility of using the method for disinfecting water. The method can be an effective alternative to traditional methods of water treatment with the use of reagents, and it also allows disinfecting water containing unwanted microorganisms, up to the level of drinking water.

Keywords: spark discharge, barrier discharge, low-temperature plasma, water disinfection.
