Abstract – The consequences of uncontrolled pollution of the Earth’s atmosphere are analyzed which has been caused by greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, etc.) resulting from human activities (global temperature increase and related Sea Level Rise, flooding of islands and continental lands, melting polar ice, death of polar bears, etc.). Two perspective approaches are formulated aiming at counteracting climate change within the scope of the concept of sustainable development: mitigation and adaptation. Furthermore, two mechanisms are considered regarding addressing these issues — financing and technology transfer. Possible approaches for solving the mentioned problems are proposed.

Keywords: climate change, air pollution, greenhouse effect, methane emissions, sustainable development.
